Abstract
The First World War is often perceived as primarily a European conflict, yet the USA was involved first through the supply of financial and manufacturing resources, and subsequently as a combatant. This paper relates ways the war affected a US accounting firm, Haskins & Sells (H&S) . now Deloitte . then one of the fastest growing public accounting firms in the world. It notes a new service demand related to income taxes, a visionary peace plan proposed by one of its partners and the involvement in the post-war liquidation commission. The study also discusses the employment of women in the firm as men reported for military duty and the consequences for the progress of women in the accountancy profession.
