Abstract
Aryltropylium ions 1a-1e were generated by photoheterolysis of the C-O bond of the corresponding methyltropylethers. The lifetime of the dif ferent tropylium ions is strongly influenced by the donor strength of the aryl substituents. The lifetime ranges from 190 mu s to 14 s. Phot oconductivity experiments evidenced the formation of ionic products.
