Abstract
The field of organizational behavior has begun to place undue emphasis on hypothesis testing and thereby underemphasize hypothesis generation. After suggesting several reasons for this, this paper reviews how useful research ideas are discovered and the prerequisites for hypothesis creation, and then catalogues hypothesis generation. Suggested criteria for acting on new research ideas and questions are: extensity, professional encounter, mental experiments, and timing.
