Abstract
The performance of a noble gas mass spectrometer used for K/Ar-Ar/Ar d ating has been improved in three ways. The background has been decreas ed by surrounding the ion source with a cylinder of St707 NEG strip. A simple method has been found for rotating the sample during irradiati on in the nuclear reactor. Finally, a furnace that does not require th e use of an additional vacuum system has been constructed for degassin g the irradiated samples. (C) 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
