Abstract
A simple piston model for the boring of ultraintense lasers into overd ense plasmas is proposed. The hydrodynamic behavior of the laser-irrad iated plasma is then determined in a self-consistent manner. Scaling l aws for the parameters characterizing the laser penetration, shock pro pagation. and shock-compressed plasma are presented. [S1063-651X(98)13 511-0].
