Abstract
When children transfer into new schools, educational and psychological consultants have unique opportunities to help educational personnel d evelop preventive interventions. In this article we review risk factor s for children undergoing school transitions and we identify ways of d ealing with these potential difficulties. A preventive intervention de veloped for high-risk transfer children is presented to illustrate how consultants can work with school systems to facilitate optimal and po sitive outcomes for children who are vulnerable for developing a numbe r of problems following a school transition.
