Abstract
Time series of cutting forces under two different regimes of turning o n a lathe were analysed. With an increase of cutting depth the cutting regime was changed from chatter-free cutting to one with chatter. Usi ng three different surrogate data tests, the dynamics of chatter-free cutting were found to be consistent with a linearly correlated random process, whereas the dynamics of chatter could be explained by a low-d imensional, presumably weakly chaotic process. The differences in the dynamics of the two cutting regimes were exploited successfully for th e purpose of chatter detection. (C) 1998 Academic Press.
