Competition in the rubber-tire industry

The tire industry affords an excellent opportunity to test the usefulness of the theory of monopolistic competition. The theory as it now stands fails because of its very simple assumptions to explain the excess capacity which exists in tire production. This suggests that the value of the work done to date lies more in its method and emphasis than in its detailed conclusions.
