THE LAND-BASED JOBS MARKET FOR SEAFARERS - CONSEQUENCES OF MARKET IMBALANCE AND POLICY IMPLICATIONS

Concern has existed for some time that the decline of the British ship ping industry is resulting in the UK economy losing its maritime skill s base, The effects of this loss could extend beyond the shipping indu stry because former seafarers are employed in other maritime related b usinesses besides shipping ashore. A study undertaken during 1995 and 1996 identified the economy's requirement for people with seafaring ex perience in land based jobs and assessed the consequences of a shortfa ll in supply of seafarers to fill such jobs.
