We examined the status of women in the experimental analysis of behavi
or by comparing authorship by women in the Journal of the Experimental
Analysis of Behavior (JEAB) to authorship by women in three similar j
ournals. For all journals, the percentage of articles with at least on
e female author, the percentage of authors who are female, and the per
centage of articles with a female first author increased from 1978 to
1997. However, the participation by women in JEAB lagged behind partic
ipation in the other journals on each measure. Female membership on th
e editorial board of JEAB also failed to increase from 1978 to 1997. S
uggestions are made that may increase the participation of women in th
e experimental analysis of behavior.
