Abstract
International accounting research poses a global challenge to accounting researchers. In particular, a variety of change pressures and the growth of closer East-West relationships present new situations and problems to be understood and solved. Pressures for accounting change that make it important to adopt an international accounting perspective are a result of a growing influence of international economic and political interdependence, the impact of foreign direct investment and multinational corporate strategy, the revolution in information technology, and the internationalization of financial markets. In this context, important East-West accounting issues include: 1. accounting and economic development, 2. foreign investment and international joint venture accounting, 3. international management accounting and control systems, 4. internationalization and development of financial markets, and 5. international stock exchange and accounting regulation. If international accounting is to be relevant, it should be problem-driven rather than methodology-driven.
