Abstract
We report on a novel approach toward generating high peak powers in pa ssively mode-locked fiber lasers. By appropriate design the fiber's mo de area is increased by a factor of similar to 30 compared to standard fiber. This increased area effectively decreases the nonlinearity thu s, increasing the power necessary to form stable soliton-like pulses.
