Abstract
An anomalously high electronic heat capacity in the monatomic plasma s tate, resulting from electron correlation effects, could lead to a con siderable amount of molecular dissociation, which is required to descr ibe the recent Nova laser Hugoniot for shocked liquid deuterium. Withi n a simple metallic-fluid model of the dissociated molecular deuterium , this effect is in accord with recent quantum Monte Carlo calculation s. [S0031-9007(98)07666-2].
