The optical birefringence (Delta n) and dielectric anisotropy las) of
nematic liquid crystals were calculated using the well-known theories
of Vuks and Maier-Meier, respectively. The molecular dipole moments an
d polarizabilities needed for the estimation were taken from semiempir
ical AM1 calculations. The calculated values are in good agreement wig
the experimental results for the investigated compounds having differ
ent core structures and polar substituents.
