AN INELASTIC NEUTRON-SCATTERING STUDY OF H-2 IN VYCOR GLASS

The orientational properties of n-H-2 confined in Vycor have been stud ied via inelastic neutron spectroscopy. We observe two distinct rotati onal transitions which we ascribe to H-2 in the center of the pore and H2 strongly bound to the surface. The molecules on the surface can be modeled as rotationally hindered rotors, and a distribution of orient ational potentials is extracted.
