There are some interesting connections between the theory of quantum c
omputation and quantum measurement. As an illustration, we present a s
cheme in which an ion trap quantum computer can be used to make arbitr
arily accurate measurements of the quadrature phase variables for the
collective vibrational motion of the ion. We also discuss some more ge
neral aspects of quantum computation and measurement in terms of the F
eynman-Deutsch principle.
