Js. Hwang, COMPUTER-NETWORKS AND THE REORGANIZATION OF CORPORATE SPACE - THE CASE OF THE KOREAN ELECTRONICS INDUSTRY, Papers in regional science, 77(2), 1998, pp. 131-154
This article investigates, both theoretically and empirically, the pat
terns and mechanisms of the interrelation between information and comm
unication technologies (ICTs) and corporate space. The study is divide
d into two parts: one is a critical review of the previous literature
in order to build a theoretical framework; the other is an empirical s
tudy on the Korean electronics industry. Research results show that fi
rms adopt and utilize computer networks in accordance with their spati
al structure and division of function. The results also suggest that c
omputer networks can create new patterns of spatial division only thro
ugh organizational change.
