A microwave-assisted method for the preparation of substituted bismuth
vanadates has been described. The method consists of starting with th
e respective oxides mixed in stoichiometric proportions and exposing t
he mixture to microwaves. Substitution takes place at the vanadium sit
es and it has been possible to prepare Ag+-, Mn4+-, Ga3+-, Y3+-, and C
e4+-substituted compounds with up to 10% substitution. Mn4+- and Ag+-s
ubstituted compounds are found to exhibit better oxygen ion conductivi
ties than any reported so far in the literature.
