REASSESSMENT OF SPIROGRAPHITES-ELLIPTICUS ASTRE, 1937 AS A TRACE FOSSIL OF NON-MARINE ARTHROPODS FROM THE LATE CRETACEOUS (GARUMN-FACIES) IN THE CATALONIAN PRE-PYRENEES (NE SPAIN)
E. Mayoral et S. Calzada, REASSESSMENT OF SPIROGRAPHITES-ELLIPTICUS ASTRE, 1937 AS A TRACE FOSSIL OF NON-MARINE ARTHROPODS FROM THE LATE CRETACEOUS (GARUMN-FACIES) IN THE CATALONIAN PRE-PYRENEES (NE SPAIN), Geobios, 31(5), 1998, pp. 633-643
In 1937 Astre described Spirographies ellipticus as a Sabellid worm fr
om the Late Cretaceous (Garumn facies) in the Catalonian pre-Pyrenees
(NE of Spain). Their external morphologic features and internal struct
ures has led to a reinterpretation of this taxon as a trace fossil and
not as an internal mould of a worm. The trace-makers are related to t
he burrowing activity of nonmarine arthropods, probably crustaceans, s
piders or insects.
