Abstract
Fetal growth requires the correct balance of nutrients, oxygen, and gr owth factors operating under the direction of a genetic plan modified by maternal factors. The classic hormones of postnatal growth play dif fering roles with alternative controls compared to those after birth. The study of conditions of abnormal fetal growth illuminates the mecha nism of normal fetal growth. It is now apparent that abnormal birth we ight leads to long-term consequences.
