Abstract
Reaction of Malononitrile with xanthenes la,b and alpha,beta-unsaturat ed carbonyl compounds 3a-e furnishes the acridines 2a,b and biphenyl d erivatives 4a-d,5. The biphenyl 4a shows lasing and non-linear optical (NLO) properties.
