As has been already suggested, especially by Schlichtmann (1985) and H
ead (1984), the parallel between language and cartographic communicati
on is possible only in the deep, concept dimension of both texts and m
aps. On the basis of this assumption an attempt to develop a systemati
cal comparison between the mental-dimension of maps and texts has been
undertaken. propositions as semantic structures of texts are compared
to map objects. The notions of informational structure (given-new con
tract) of map-objects, and its dependency on the context are introduce
d. Finally, map and text structures are compared on the basis of the v
an Dijk's (1980) theory of macrostructures.
