Abstract
The first experiments in which two-dimensional (2D) pictures are obtai ned by an ultranarrowband mercury vapor resonance ionization image det ector (RIID) are demonstrated. It is shown that the use of a microchan nel plate in an atomic vapor cell allows the achievement of true 2D ul tranarrowband imaging, as well as a dramatic improvement in spatial re solution and signal level.
