Evidence is provided of the role of the different hybridization streng
th between the surface layers and the bulk in determining the magnitud
e of the surface shift for the shallow Ce 4f levels. with respect to d
eeper core levels. The analysis is performed on both the surface- and
bulk-related f(0) (ionization) and f(2) (affinity) features by means o
f photoemission and inverse photoemission, respectively, at various hv
. The experimental findings show a good agreement with the results of
a model calculation based on the Anderson impurity Hamiltonian.
