A new type of liquid-core optical fiber (LCOF) as an absorption cuvett
e for spectrophotomic determination, which had high light transmission
in aqueous solutions in the ultraviolet region (minimum wavelength 23
0 nm) was achieved. The preparation of an aqueous solution for LCOF wa
s given and the source light introduction into the LCOF was described.
The loss spectra of a LCOF filled with aqueous ethanol solutions were
measured and the empirical formulas obtained for the nth harmonic abs
orption peaks of O-H and C-H stretch vibrations in ethanol were nu(n)=
n(2979-57n) cm(-1) and nu(n) = (2922-63n) cm(-1), respectively. Carbam
azipine and Vitamin C were detected with a 100 cm long LCOF in the ult
raviolet region. The sensitivity was increased over 100 times compared
to a 1 cm cell. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
