The gametophytic and young sporophytic stages of Phyllariopsis purpura
scens (C. Agardh) Henry et South (Phyllariaceae, Laminariales, Phaeoph
yta) were studied in cultures originating from isolated zoospores prod
uced by mature sporophytes. Zoospores possess an eyespot that is disce
rnible even while the spores are in the sporangium. After germination,
dioecious hut sexually monomorphic garnetophytes are formed. Young sp
orophytes sometimes have a uniseriate basal portion. The characteristi
cs of the gametophytes and young sporophytes are like those of the oth
er species of the genus, Phyllariopsis brevipes (C. Agardh) Henry et S
outh. This is the third known species of the Laminariales with dioecio
us but sexually monomorphic gametophytes.
