Investigation of the alpha,beta-unsaturated-alpha-amino acids-dehydrov
aline, dehydrophenylalanine, and dehydropipecolinic acid-revealed that
these compounds undergo rapid hydrolysis in neutral aqueous medium, v
ia the imine tautomers, even when the corresponding eaters and sodium
salts exist as the enamine tautomers. This is true even for dehydropip
ecolinic acid which had been reported to be stable for 10-18 h in dilu
te aqueous neutral solution. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. Ail rights
