Abstract
The interaction of STEM electrons with cylindrical surfaces is investi gated within the framework of the self-energy formalism. The energy lo ss is studied as a function of the impact parameter and for the case o f broad beam geometries, An expression for the effective inverse longi tudinal dielectric function of isolated cylinders is derived, and appl ications of this theory are reviewed.
