The magnetic structure of the c(2 x 2) S/Fe(001) system was investigat
ed using spin-polarized Auger electron diffraction. We consider the su
lfur LMM Auger process following core-hole creation by polarized X-ray
s. The Auger electron diffraction is described by the scattering path
operator including single and multiple scattering processes. The contr
ibutions of different sources of the spin polarization, such as spin p
olarization of the core-hole, the scattering at the surrounding atoms
and local magnetic moments, are investigated. The magnetic scattering
gives the main contribution to the spin polarization.
