Abstract
Some possible uses of vibrational and electronic spectroscopies in cha racterising the basic interactions in C-60 and C-70 complexes are poin ted out. We report on the wealth of infrared spectra of (usually) sing le crystals of C-60 and C-70 clathrates and complexes with organic don ors. The changes in the spectral parameters of the complexes in compar ison with those of the neutral fullerene molecules are attributed to r edistribution of the charge on the spherical C-60 or elongated C-70 mo lecules in their compounds. Some general considerations on the origin of the IR, NIR, VIS and UV spectral variations are also given. (C) 199 8 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
