Lipophilic calix[4]resorcinarenes-condensation products of resorcinol
and lauryl aldehyde comprising four resorcinol units-form electron don
or-acceptor complexes with electron accepters tetracyanoquinodimethane
(TCNQ) and tetracyanoethylene (TCNE) in organic solvents. Their forma
tion was confirmed by EPR and UV-vis spectroscopy, except for compound
s c1 and c3 which did not form charge transfer (CT) complexes with TCN
E. Titration experiments involving calixarenes and electron accepters
indicated the presence of species of different stoichiometries. Comple
xes with ligands c1-c4 were characterised spectroscopically. CT bands
appeared in most cases. (C) 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
