G. Meganck et al., A NON-DIPLOID, SMALL-CELL CARCINOMA OF THE OVARY OF THE HYPERCALCEMICTYPE, International journal of gynecological cancer, 8(5), 1998, pp. 430-433
Small cell carcinoma of the ovary is a rare, highly malignant tumor th
at occurs typically in young females. It usually manifests as a solid,
unilateral adnexal mass which is in approximately 75% of cases accomp
anied by paraneoplastic hypercalcemia. We report a case of ovarian sma
ll cell carcinoma and describe the clinical, histological and immunohi
stochemical features. The tumor was p53, MIB-1, vimentin, epithelial m
embrane antigen and prekeratin positive and bcl-2 and S-100 negative.
Despite the highly malignant behavior of this tumor, all reported case
s have hitherto been diploid. This case is the first reported non-dipl
oid small cell carcinoma of the ovary.
