The reason for the disintegration of a turbine disk in an aeroengine w
as investigated by optical microscopy, electron probe composition anal
ysis and transmission electron microscope diffraction analysis. The an
alysis results showed that the accident was caused by lamellar defects
in the steel. The lamellar defects were primarily composed of the cal
cium aluminate inclusions CaO . 2Al(2)O(3) and CaO . 6Al(2)O(3) which
stemmed mainly from deoxidization products in the course of steelmakin
