Nc. Biswas et Sp. Chaudhuri, SINTERING AND FRACTURE-TOUGHNESS OF ALUMINA-ZIRCONIA COMPOSITES, INDIAN JOURNAL OF ENGINEERING AND MATERIALS SCIENCES, 5(5), 1998, pp. 307-311
Microstructure, grain growth and fracture toughness of alumina-zirconi
a composites prepared from commercial grade technical alumina and impo
rted zirconia were studied. Ostwald ripening and coalescence of ZrO2 a
nd Al2O3 grains were observed. Fracture toughness of the composites ha
ving different phase assemblages seemed to be controlled by the transf
ormation toughening and microcracking toughening mechanisms. Highest f
racture toughness of the order of 5.5 MN m(-3/2) was found for the com
posite prepared from a batch of Al2O3 + 29.5% ZrO2 + 1.5% Y2O3.
