Abstract
Microparticulate Emission (MPE) from Variable Polarity Plasma Are (VPP A) welds in 2195 aluminum-lithium alloy is described. It takes various forms herein labelled ''Smut'', ''Snow'', and ''Lava''. It is attribu ted to a gas generating reaction taking place at molten grain boundari es or crack surfaces. The reaction could be a release of hydrogen disp laced from lithium-hydride by an influx of dissolved nitrogen. There a ppears to be a close link between cracking and MPE.
