Abstract
The last decade has seen major strides in the development of processes and equipment which will have a great influence on the way in which i ndustrial heat treatment is conducted into the 21st century. Numerous advances in atmosphere and vacuum heat treatment technology are leadin g to the transition of furnaces into heat treatment machines capable o f being totally integrated into manufacturing lines. This two-part pap er reviews these advances, concentrating initially on atmosphere proce ssing.
