TRANSPORTATION AND ENVIRONMENT IN XIAMEN

This paper reviews the traffic congestion and air pollution problems i n Xiamen, analyses policies adopted by the Xiamen municipal government to improve the transportation conditions and air quality, presents a methodological framework for integrated transportation planning in Xia men, and recommends additional policies to improve Xiamen's transporta tion and environment. The paper's objective is to provide the Xiamen m unicipal government with planning information and provide a case study for other city planning institutions. This paper concludes that futur e transportation in Xiamen should integrate various sectors in a zone, develop public mass transportation-which will reduce both traffic con gestion and inner city air pollution-and build more parking spaces.
