The stability of a highly charged, isolated conductive drop is analyze
d within the principle of minimum potential energy of a closed system.
A treatment of the stability of drops of ellipsoidal shape shows that
both spherical drops and drops having an oblate spheroidal shape expe
rience instability at sufficiently large charges according to a single
scheme, i.e., they deform to a prolate spheroid. (C) 1998 American In
