The thermal decomposition of 6-hydroperoxy-6-hexanelactam was studied
in the presence of antioxidants of the phenol, secondary aromatic amin
e and piperidine-1-oxyl types. The thermolysis of the hydroperoxide pr
oceeds mainly as a chain decomposition induced by radicals. This proce
ss can be inhibited only by a piperidine-1-oxyl derivative. Phenols an
d secondary aromatic amines only interrupt the chain reaction in the f
irst step. Neither heterolysis, nor homolysis of the hydroperoxide is
influenced by the presence of antioxidants. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science
