The generation of large-scale magnetic fields and electric currents vi
a small-scale turbulent motions of the conducting medium, which plays
an important role in the dynamics of astro- and geophysical objects an
d laboratory plasmas, is studied. In particular, this effect is respon
sible for the generation of the current directed along the axial magne
tic field line in the toroidal reversed-field pinch (the so-called alp
ha effect). It is shown for the first time that a similar effect takes
place in open magnetic confinement systems.
