DNA vaccination is a rapidly developing technology that offers new app
roaches for the prevention of disease. This technology may permit the
production of new vaccines against diseases that have no current vacci
ne, as well as allowing the development of improved vaccines to replac
e existing products. We describe how DNA vaccination is being develope
d for use in commercial animal production, with an emphasis on viral d
iseases, and discuss the existing hurdles to its development and use.
