Abstract
A new species of bythitid, Lucifuga inopinata, is described from an ad ult female captured in 203 m from a seamount in the SE Galapagos Archi pelago. It differs from its congeners in its high pectoral ray and ver tebral numbers, as well as having a preopercular spine. Also included are a key to the genus Lucifuga, comments on its species, and a discus sion of the origin of onshore bythitids.
