In the last few years, significant changes in the attitudes toward the
West have occurred in Russia. While ''old'' Russian liberals, like Eg
or Gaidar, treated the West as a Russian ally, the ''new'' liberals, s
uch as Boris Nemtsov, perceived the West as a rival approaching, in th
is respect, Russian communists and nationalists who see in the West an
eternal enemy. The author describes this change using various informa
