Abstract
Polarisation mode dispersion impedes the development of high capacity optical trunk lines but can be compensated for by an adaptive compensa tor in the receiver. By using three polarisation mode dispersion penal ty extraction signals, differential group delays exceeding one bit dur ation are compensated for in a 40Gbit/s optical transmission system fo r the first time.
