Abstract
Phosphoniobetaine and arsenobetaine, the P and As analogues of glycine betaine (trimethylammonioacetate) were synthesized and assayed for ac tivity in bacterial osmoprotection biotests, using Escherichia coli an d Rhizobium meliloti as model organisms. The P- and As-betaines displa yed similar osmoprotective activities in E. coli, but were highly toxi c in the betaine-demethylating bacterium R. meliloti. (C) 1997 Elsevie r Science Ltd.
