Abstract
This study investigated the psychosocial and physiological environment s and their possible relationships to musculoskeletal symptoms (MSS) a nd headaches at a high-tech telecommunications company. Two department s (116 subjects) responded to a questionnaire focusing on psychosocial and physical environment, socio-economic status, health and well-bein g. Blood samples were analysed for testosterone, cortisol, and prolact in. A significant correlation was found between MSS and low skills uti lization as well as poor balance between job autonomy and workload. Th e results also revealed correlations between some other occupational p sychosocial factors and MSS and headaches, respectively. A significant correlation was also found between intensity of MSS and decreased tes tosterone levels. It is concluded that at least part of musculoskeleta l symptoms and headaches found in high-tech environments might be medi ated via neuroendocrine mechanisms. These results are based on a cross -sectional study; they should therefore be repeated - preferably using a longitudinal and interventional approach.
