Abstract
The state of knowledge of the genus Amanita Pers. in tropical and southern Africa is reviewed and discussed. It is concluded that the tropical represe ntatives are in great need of critical revision. One of the most common spe cies, Amanita loosii Beeli (accepted syn. : A. zambiana) is lectotypified a nd its distribution is given.
