Henderson, A. (Institute of Systematic Botany, The New York Botanical Garde
n, Bronx, NY 10458, U.S.A.). A phylogenetic analysis of the Euterpeinae (Pa
lmae; Arecoideae; Areceae) based on morphology and anatomy. Brittonia 51: 1
06-113. 1999. -The Euterpeinae contains six neotropical genera. There has b
een continual disagreement on generic and subgeneric boundaries in the subt
ribe. Euterpe and Prestoea, and Jessenia and Oenocarpus, have been repeated
ly united and separated. A phylogenetic analysis based on 54 morphological
and anatomical characters gave one tree of 127 steps. Euterpe, is separate
from PPrestoea, but Jessenia and Oenocarpus are best treated as one genus.
Subgeneric relationships of Euterpe and Oenocarpus are also analyzed and di
scussed.
