The electrochemical behavior of an Al anode in organic electrolytes was inv
estigated. Common contemporary electrolytes for Li batteries were selected,
based on their activity toward Al anodic dissolution. Significant improvem
ent (anodic shift) of E-Al/Al(3+) by up to 1 V occurs in several electrolyt
es, and can exhibit efficient coulombic oxidation of aluminum. Enhanced E-A
l/Al(3+) electrolytes include (C2H5)(4)NCl (TEA), and AlCl3 in gamma-butyro
lactone (BLA) and acetonitrile (ACN) solvents, forming solutions such as TE
A/BLA, TEA/ACN, and concentration optimized AlCl3/KCl/BLA. gamma-butyrolact
one based electrolytes exhibit evidence of quasireversible Al activity crea
ting possibilities for rechargeable batteries. (C) 1999 The Electrochemical
