Modern technologies have a profound impact on society in the current age of
global competition. Yet, we do not understand the long-term impact of prol
iferation of technology on society's long-term sustainability. This paper p
resents one perspective of how the evolution of technology has (1) brought
about mixed results, some of which need to be reconsidered given that the e
nvironmental well is not bottomless and (2) outdistanced the economic and p
olitical systems, putting in question who is in the driver's seat in key de
cision-making processes. We argue that the locus of control in the New Worl
d order needs to ensure long-term 'sustainability' as opposed to short-term
'economization'.
